Lightfoot victorious at TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon

Sabah, Malaysia is such a special place. Not only because of its trails but also the people and the community there. Trail running is becoming more popular in Malaysia partly due to the work of the Bandito Brothers, Claus Peterson and Aman Avtar Singh who organise a number of events in Sabah.

Race morning I woke up to views like this of Mount Kinabalu taken from Sabah Tea Garden, with workers already cutting tea leaves.

Kinabalu is Malaysia's highest mountain at 4095m, for me there's something magical and majestic about the mountain and I'm continuously find my self drawn to it. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to race here thanks to Aman and Claus.

I tested my body and also my mental state in I way I've never experienced before because of the heat and humidity in the race, especially in the second half where the trails became a little more technical and the temperature increased.

My head toyed with how I was going to finish "if" I was going to finish and on a number of occasions I had to lie down in the river to bring my core temperature down, I've never raced in heat and humidity like that. A tough race through the jungle made tougher by the heat. I covered 69km (I went slightly wrong as I missed a marker) and 2200m of ascent.

For the race I used the new Salomon Running S-lab Speed, Exo Shorts, Sense t shirt, S-lab pack, Stance socks Superfeet - The Premium Insole insoles, Salomon soft flasks and Suunto Ambit 3 Sport. For nutrition I used only High5 Sports Nutrition Iso gels, energy bars, Zero electrolyte tablets and the new berry Caffeine Iso Gels.

It was great to be racing along side Saffery Sumping and his brother a couple of local guys who are mountain guides on Kinabalu who recently made a rescue attempt on the mountain after the earthquake, Saffery won the 30km and his brother was 2nd in the 65km.

Anybody looking for trail events in Asia should come visit Sabah and try out one of the smoothly run events run by the Bandito Brothers Claus & Aman. More info via the Borneo TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon site here http://www.sabahadventurechallenge.com

Personal statement
“The community manager role at Salomon couples my passion for trail running with my enthusiasm for social media, community interaction and event management. It’s very rewarding when you connect with people and help them develop their knowledge, or merely put a smile on their face.

Personally it also means that get to run in some of the worlds best equipment and run in some great places around the world - something that many runners would be rightly envious of!”
